The two older kids have been in Orlando with their Mimi all week. Matt and I have been busy finishing getting settled while our little Desta girl stays with us.
I am profoundly amazed at the energy level of that little one! I don’t remember my other two having as much energy and curiosity as Desta does. She gets into everything. For instance, the outlets in this house are a bit on the old side (the house is old, stately and wonderful but old). Those handy dandy outlet covers I used with such vigor and determination in Colorado almost fall out. Desta girl? Well, she just puts them back in, regardless of the fact that her stubby little fingers are coming awfully close to an electrical source. Yikes!
Her latest trick? Getting her sippy cup and immediately filling it with water from the cooler (Yes, another interesting find in Florida. The water out of the tap tastes terrible so water coolers come in handy for refreshment and hurricane preparedness). Desta knows that she is not allowed to push the button on the cooler so uses a cup because heck, everyone else seems to be doing that too.
By the end of the day, watching one 15 month old is WAY more tiring than a classroom of second graders hands down. BUT I would not give up all my exhaustion and redirecting for anything. Because this time last year we had failed court the first time and were praying fervently that our girl would be with us before court closure in early August.
I can’t believe we are approaching a year since we got her. So much has changed. She is a precocious toddler, running everywhere, talking nonstop, loving her doggy and eating like a champ (Tracy, thanks to our visit, I got on the bandwagon and Desta is officially off formula!) She is a gift, albeit a busy gift, that will keep us, her Daddy and Mommy, on their toes for a long time to come I think!
I was born in Jos, Nigeria many years ago. I spent the next nineteen years living in Liberia, Kenya and Ethiopia.
