I am married to a wise man. I always knew he was smart. Heck, any man who picked Political Science as a “fun” major in college had to smart. But wisdom…that is something learned.
Matt reads and observes the world in a radically different way than I do. He is always learning, researching and processing the latest idea.
And thankfully he is willing to share all that knowledge with me. (It makes me look real good in a book club…if only they knew I was “borrowing” all those killer comments from my man.) But wisdom, well, that comes with experiencing life, NOT just reading and studying.
The past few weeks have been HUGE in our family. We are in the middle of some MAJOR decisions and it’s been hard, peaceful but hard. BUT my husband, he is OUT there, pounding the pavement.
But back to wisdom…He told me the other day, “Melodie, our children want to hear two things. Not what to do, how to do it or how to keep it clean (ouch! I am a stickler for organization and cleanliness!). NOPE. They want to hear, “I love you!” and “I’m so proud of you.”
So I’m working on that this week. Today while shoveling snow I thought about how amazing my Caroline is with her baby sister. Instead of just putting the thought aside, I told her. That one phrase began a 5 minute conversation about how much she loves her baby sister (and brother at times!). I’m so glad I listened to Matt and that I followed through!
I was born in Jos, Nigeria many years ago. I spent the next nineteen years living in Liberia, Kenya and Ethiopia.
wow. thanks for sharing! that is some great wisdom!!!
