We are working on some new things around here. It has come out of necessity.
As I’ve mentioned many times, our youngest doesn’t seem to need to sleep EVER.
I’m serious people. That child is up between 4:30 and 5 each morning and often lays in her bed long after her 7:15 pm bedtime (if we manage to get her there at that time.)
She does not nap and she does not stop. I’m already thinking of what careers to push her towards come adulthood; airplane tower controller sounds like a good match!
For the rest of the family, this sleep system of Desta doesn’t work. Mostly for her mom and dad. Desta learned very quickly NOT to interrupt her siblings while sleeping. Let’s just say certain items may have been thrown across the room after one such early encounter with a sibling.
Enter the digital alarm clock. Oh really, I’m not that patient to teach her how to use the old-fashioned time telling machine. Nope, digital it is.
Second little secret. She does NOT know how to turn the alarm on and off. This is vital in our success plan.
Currently the clock is set for 6:20. Yes, for this little rooster it’s an interminable amount of time to sit in her room by herself! For Matt and I, we are crossing all extremities in hopes that she continues following “THE RULES.”
Here are the rules.
Rule 1: Upon awakening, she may turn on a light in her room.
Rule 2: Upon awakening, she is not permitted to leave her room unless a bathroom need arises.
Rule 3: If said bathroom emergency arises, she must be SILENT in her venture to and from the bathroom.
Rule 4: She is not permitted to leave her room until the alarm begins to sound.
We are three days into our new venture. Day 1 was a success. Day 2 was a hot mess. Yelling, crying, full-blown hot mess. Day 3 was a semi success. Rule 3 was not followed.
It’s all baby steps. I realize that Desta is that kid who doesn’t need sleep. I also realize that we need to teach her how to be alone and quiet for moments of time.
It’s my dream that in a month’s time I will have inched that alarm to 6:40 and she will have remained in her room for the entire blessed sacred time sans noise. It is my dream today!
