Due to Colorado’s awesome weather patterns of late, the weekend was once again rainy, cold and too miserable to be outside. Matt and I decided to take the kids to see Earth. (I had blogged about this movie on Wednesday, Earth Day).
The movie was amazing! The photography incredible. Even Tobin, our four year old, sat through most of the movie (a major feat considering he did not have a drink or popcorn to entertain him this time).
The movie followed the migration journeys of three main families, the whale, the elephant and the polar bear. We saw many more animals, plants and ecosystems but I was drawn to the whale.
This humpback whale gives birth in tropical waters and then treks all the way to the Antarctic Circle with her baby for food. As the mother and her baby began their journey, they ventured into rough and stormy waters. The mother flipped on her back and began spanking the water with her fins. The narrator (James Earl Jones) explained that the mother and baby repeated this smacking sound in order to make sure they didn’t get lost from each other. (I was also impressed with her breastfeeding ability…having over 100 GALLONS of milk a day for her baby!)
It struck me how amazing it was to see a whale know that 1. she needed to go south at just the right time in order to get the krill that is in the Antarctic waters for just those few months 2. she knew exactly how to travel (for this directionless mama, I’d like that built in sensor) and 3. she knew how to keep her baby close, how to protect her.
Throughout the entire movie I kept coming back to the first chapters of Genesis. God took a day to make the birds of the air and the fish of the sea. Seeing these spectactular creatures was amazing, their beauty and creativity was incredible.
Watching the movie helped me put back into perspective that if God can make all those amazing creatures for our enjoyment, he certainly can take care of the timing of our referral, court date and travel to get our baby girl.
I was born in Jos, Nigeria many years ago. I spent the next nineteen years living in Liberia, Kenya and Ethiopia.
That’s right! He CAN and He WILL!
I really want to see Earth. I’ve been running again, Melodie. Oh it feels good. And I’m so glad to come here and see that you’ve done 17 miles recently – you are amazing and great inspiration. I’m hoping to ramp my miles up soon.
