Finding help in the most uncommon place

There are a lot of things that make my heart heavy and sad.  I opened the Denver Post this morning.  Lots of sad and heavy things there but also one very amazing story.

Are you familiar with female circumcision?  It does indeed exist today.  I’ve read bits and pieces about it over the past decade.

Did you know that Trinidad, Colorado is the capital of sex change operations?

How does those two things fit together right?

Well, there is an amazing doctor, Marci Bowers. She went to France and learned a cutting edge surgery that helps these women get their lives back.  And Trinidad? Well, the hospital there has given these women a flat rate of $1500 to use the operation room.  Since insurance doesn’t usually cover these types of surgery, that is a huge gift to the patients.

And while they receive this life changing surgery, they are able to meet other woman who have experienced the same type of mutilation; someone to identify with, removing the isolation so many of them feel.

I loved this story.  I love hearing how someone is willing to do something to help.  The goal is to stop this practice of female circumcision altogether.  But until then, there is hope for these women to live a normal life.

I love that something as far out as a sex change hospital brings hope to women who have experienced unimaginable pain and tragedy.

Go here to read the entire article.  It’s hard to read but worth it, I believe.

You should watch the movie Moolade. It’s about Senegal and female mutilation. It’s also a good drama entirely in subtitles. I’d rate it PG-13 so don’t watch it with the kids.
