Mimi was a lifesaver last night. She had night duty with Desta so Matt and I could sleep. Desta really is the perfect baby so far. She cries a little, eats a ton and then goes right back to sleep, 4 hour spurts! Because these little babies were on such a routine at the transition home, it has been really easy to keep the same routine here.
For families with babies coming, I have a few things I wished I knew.
1. The babies seem to be eating more than what we all planned for. I had brought 3 large cans of formula and she has whipped through 2 already. Bring more formula than you think you’ll need.
2. Slow flow nipples. I had thought I’d brought the “slow” nipples…found out I only had 3. That’s all she can handle. Any bigger size with more holes makes them choke!
3. LOVE the Huggies disposable wash rags I brought. We are bathing Desta in the sink and she is so slippery and small that the washclothes help me get her bathed and out of there before a calamity occurs. With the water being sometimes on the cold side, the washclothes also help. It might not be the most environmentally item but with laundry taking two days to get back, I’m glad I’m not waiting on clothes.
4. Burp rags: Wish I had brought all mine. I have been using the flannel blankets I brought for everything. Blocking the diesel fumes when we drive, shielding her from sun and rain and burping rags! These are great to have!
That’s my list for now. Matt and his mom are heading to the orphanage today. Desta and I will be here at the guesthouse, eating, sleeping and packing for tomorrow’s big trip! We are going to the supermarket for a few things today but that’s it. I’m so glad there is a down day. I am tired and ready to get home!
I was born in Jos, Nigeria many years ago. I spent the next nineteen years living in Liberia, Kenya and Ethiopia.
